Completed GMGA Grants

The GMGA’s purpose is to stimulate interest, increase knowledge and share their enthusiasm, interest and knowledge.  One of the ways we do that is by offering grants for specific projects in communities across Georgia.

Grants can only be applied for by active Master Gardeners, so if you have an idea for your  neighborhood,  please contact your local MG chapter.

As part of the GMGA Grant requirement, the grantees must furnish a report showing us all how they successfully completed their project  and what they accomplished.

COBB CO. -

PLANT A ROW – Fountain Gate Gardens (2012)

We have received a GMGA Grant for signage. The MGVOCC Plant A Row project is a stakeholder , along with Kennesaw State University, and Historic Kennesaw Community Garden, of Fountain Gate Gardens. Fountain Gate Gardens is being developed by Fountain Gate Counseling Services on a 3 acre piece of land near downtown Kennesaw, GA. More photos right here.

RUSSELL ELEMENTARY’S BUTTERFLY GARDEN (2011)

Students and teachers at Russell Elementary in Smyrna, GA absolutely love their new Butterfly Garden!  The biggest surprise this year was having 22 Black Swallowtail caterpillars and 8 Monarch caterpillars.  Everyone enjoyed learning and watching the life cycle of the butterflies.

Harris County – Down and Dirty at Oakhurst Farm

Jr. MG's at Oakhurst FarmFunds for Down and Dirty on the Farm provided sensory rich, emotionally engaging hands-on agricultural experiences for youth, teachers, parents and volunteers. Volunteers included MG’s as well as volunteers from KIA, Total Systems, Harris County Library, Columbus State University and local farms. Over 400 youths participated, planting vegetables, grooming livestock, composting, plant-a-pot of pansies and more. The full report is right here.


Hart Co. – Hart County Botanical Garden – Georgia Gold Medal Plants Signage

Since 2009, the Hart County MG’s have worked on the Sun Perennial Garden at the Hart County Botanical Garden. This year’s grant was for complete signage to identify Georgia Gold Medal Plants and to expand the educational material within the garden. The full report is right here. Richmond-Columbia Counties

Martinez Post Office 2009-continuing

The area around the Martinez Post Office was renovated – including saving some venerable Bradford Pear trees – and perennials and annuals planted to make the area more appealing and attractive. Trees were trimmed and plants with low irrigation and maintenance requirements were selected and planted around the Post Ofice.

CHEROKEE COUNTY

Funk Heritage Center at Reinhardt University

Master Gardeners of Cherokee County worked with the Funk Heritage Center to purchase and install signs for the native plants in the Center’s native xeriscape garden. These informative signs will allow the Center’s thousands of visitors to identify drought resistant plants to use in their own gardens.
