EDIBLE EDUCATION GARDEN
Edible Education Garden Created by 12 Master Gardeners and 12-15 students in Gilmer County
The Master Gardeners of Gilmer County worked with the 3 Rivers Boys and Girls Club of North Georgia. It was after an after school program in the spring an fall and during their summer program and covered multiple gardening topics. The group was divided in half. One group worked in the raised beds to plant vegetables, herbs, flower, water, and pull weeds. They also identified beneficial insets with the use of insect guide books. The other half had prepared lessons with related literature and planned hands-on activities. The groups then changed activities. We used the funds from the GMGA grant to purchase books, seeds, stakes & twine to make tomato cages and bean trellises using local bamboo. The students learned that a garden is a wonderful place for kids with different learning styles and abilities to interact, explore and have fun in the outdoor laboratory.
