FAYETTEVILLE: Meet your Native Bees

Fayette County Public Meeting Room (First Floor, Suite 100), Fayette County Administrative Complex, 140 Stonewall Avenue, Fayetteville 30214. Our Guest Speaker is Peter Helfrich, President of the Metro Atlanta Beekeepers Association, Chair of City of Decatur Bee City USA. Honey bees are incredibly important to our agricultural system. We couldn’t enjoy many of our favorite foods without them! But like many of us, they're not native to our state, or even to North America for that matter!  This fully illustrated presentation will introduce you to a few of the almost 500 species of bees that are native to Georgia and which can be found in backyards across the metro Atlanta region. Find out how native bees like bumble bees, mason bees, leafcutter bees, sweat bees and carpenter bees are similar to, and different from, their better-known honey bee cousins. Learn where these vitally important pollinators live, what they do, and how they survive. You'll also receive some helpful tips on how to identify them and tell them apart.
