Bethesda Senior Center, 225 Bethesda Church Rd., Lawrenceville, GA. GUEST SPEAKER, Kirk Simpson, has been growing carnivorous plants for 20 years, after beginning the hobby as a science project in the 6th grade. He now operates Atlanta Carnivorous Gardens out of his backyard in Snellville where he opens his gardens for tours, interactive demonstrations and purchases one weekend per month during the growing season of May—October. Kirk specializes in native, temperate carnivorous plants which can be found throughout the Southeastern U.S., with a particular emphasis on North American Pitcher Plants (Sarracenia) as well as Venus Flytraps and Sundews. He teaches growers about cultivating these plants outdoors in the Atlanta area, and focuses on passing on his expertise to children and new growers. Kirk also works with other growers to help preserve these plants’ native habitats, which have become increasingly threatened over the past decades.
